a sumobot built by me, miles, and jonas.
how it works
instead of using ir sensors to detect the arena edge, we took a mechanical approach with roller lever limit switches mounted under the chassis. when a roller drops off the edge, the switch triggers and the bot reverses. this gives a physical, reliable signal without any sensor calibration.
design
- chassis designed in fusion 360 and 3d printed
- driven by two dc motors with direct drive to the wheels
- front wedge to get under opponents
- limit switches wired to an arduino for edge detection
results
the bot performed well in class competitions. the mechanical edge detection proved reliable and gave us a consistent strategy without needing to tune sensor thresholds.
